A city of vast proportions, Tokyo is also one of the most dynamic and exhilarating cities in the world. At one time known as Edo, or ‘Gate of the River’ for its location at the mouth of the Sumidagawa River, it first gained importance in 1603, when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his military government, or ‘shogunate’ here. From a little-known backwater town, Edo grew into a city from which the Tokugawa clan governed all of Japan. By the late-18th century, it had become the most populous city in the world. When the Tokugawa clan fell from power and the authority of the emperor was restored in 1868, he moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo. At this point, the city also was renamed Tokyo, which means ‘Eastern Capital’.

Located on the calm waters of the Inland Sea, Kobe has served as an important port town for hundreds of years. It was one of the first harbors to accept foreign traders in 1868 when Japan was just emerging from its centuries of isolation. What followed was a surge of Western trade and exports. Today, Kobe is quite multicultural, with expatriates from 98 different nations in residence, providing a cultural diversity most easily visible in restaurants serving every kind of cuisine, including the now world-famous Kobe beef. The Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 set back Kobe's development, but not for long. Kobe emerged more vibrant than before - with additional attractions, hotels and urban redevelopment, and only a few remnants of the extensive damage. It is a cosmopolitan place with lively shopping arcades, interesting museums, great restaurants and a port that is still at the heart of things. Kobe is well known for its nightlife, in an intimate quarter of neon lights, cozy bars and sophisticated nightclubs. It also serves as the gateway to the ancient Japanese capitals of Kyoto and Nara.

Strategically located where the Yangtze River, Grand Canal and Pacific Ocean meet, Shanghai has served as a major commercial port since the Song Dynasty (10th century). From here, the region's substantial cotton crop was shipped to Beijing and more remote regions in China and Japan. By the Qing Dynasty, vast mercantile guilds, organized by trade, had established economic and a considerable amount of political control of the city. In the 1840s Shanghai was described by a representative of the British East India Company as “the principal emporium of Eastern Asia.” Not surprisingly, after the Opium Wars the British moved in under the Treaty of Nanking, followed by the French, and set up the first foreign concessions in the city.

Silversea Cruises offer a boutique service, creating a luxurious and personalised experience for each guest. While many cruise lines opt for bigger ships, Silversea Cruises maintain the intimacy of smaller ships. Onboard, there is no service spared to provide a comfortable and sophisticated experience for each guest. Every suite has a view of the ocean and most have a private veranda. And, with a guest to staff ratio of almost one to one, you are tended to by the personalised service of your own private butler. All meals are included, beverages are complimentary and your preferred selections will be stocked in your suite.

Enjoy the onboard entertainment without the stress of reservations, cover charges or bar tabs. Take in a cabaret-style show or a lecture on specialised topics relating to your destination. With live music, casino games, feature films and variety acts, there’s never a lack of entertainment to experience onboard a Silversea’s cruise.

Silversea’s smaller ships offer you a chance to explore rare ports of call, as well as the most famous cities. There are a variety of destinations available with popular itineraries through the Mediterranean, Alaska and the Caribbean. Take an intimate cruise through Africa, Arabia and the Indian Ocean, or Canada and New England. Go on a Grand Voyage from Venice to Istanbul, or Monte Carlo to Copenhagen. Onboard Silversea, culinary inspiration is taken from the port destination, allowing you to immerse yourself in the culture of the region. The sophisticated main dining room on every ship, The Restaurant, is always open seating, so you can arrive whenever and dine with whomever you choose. Le Champagne, the only Wine Restaurant by Relais & Chateaux (Silversea Cruises dining partners) at sea, offers fine wines complemented by a set tasting menu. For something more casual, have lunch at the Pool Grill for oven-fresh pizza and lighter dare. At night-time it transforms into The Grill, featuring “hot rock” dining under the stars.

Silversea Cruises offers an adult-oriented cruise experiences, and only accommodates children over the age of six months.
