Destination Overview

The northernmost region of Africa is comprised of seven nations - Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, South Sudan and Tunisia, as well as the contested territory of Western Sahara. This sprawling northern region is geographically separated from the rest of Africa by the vast sands of the arid Sahara Desert.

The snow-capped Atlas Mountains further break down these nations into two sub regions, known as Maghreb and the Sahara. The western nations lying along the ridges of the Atlas Mountains – including Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco – make up the Maghreb, while Egypt, Sudan and South Sudan form part of the arid Saharan region.

  • Currency - Morocco (Moroccan Dirham MAD), Western Sahara (MAD & DZD), Algeria (Algerian Dinar DZD), Tunisia (Tunisian Dinar TND), Egypt (Egyptian Pound EGP), Libya (Libyan Dinar LYD), Sudan (Sudanese Pound SDG), South Sudan (South Sudanese Pound SSP)
  • Population - Approx. 199 million
  • Time Zones - UTC+0 (Morocco, Western Sahara), UTC+1 (Algeria, Tunisia), UTC+2 (Egypt, Libya), UTC+3 (Sudan, South Sudan)

Did you know..?

The most popular tourist destination in Africa is Egypt, with more than 10 million tourists visiting each year.

Who goes there?

Luxury lines such as Seabourn, Silverseas, Oceania, Crystal Cruises, Azamara and Regent Seven Seas all offer specialty itineraries to North Africa.

Mediterranean, repositioning and world cruise itineraries offered by big-ship lines such as Norwegian Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, MSC, P&O Cruises International, Princess Cruises and Cunard Cruise Line also pull in to North African ports.

Best time to go?

Most cruises call into North African ports between October and April, which coincides with Africa’s dry season. Although rain isn’t necessarily a factor in North African travel, air temperatures are generally cooler at this time of year, making travel more comfortable.

Highlights

Not short on archaeological wonders or cultural focal points, a trip to North Africa contains plenty of highlights.

  • Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city is an enchanting melting pot of chic bars and stylish restaurants, while its grand Hassan II Mosque is truly breathtaking
  • The mysterious Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile is one of Egypt's most popular attractions, and houses the remains of several ancient Pharaohs
  • Tunisia is arguably best known for its sunny beaches and affordable resort-style luxury, however the ancient ruins of Carthage are perhaps its most popular attraction.
