This is the voyage of the Lesser Antilles but less is probably not a word you’ll use to describe it
Especially in St. Barts. Here there are greater beaches (CNN ranked Saline Beach its No. 5 in the world), greater boutiques, greater things to see and greater restaurants than anywhere in the Caribbean. On Dominica, learn the history of the ancient Carib Indians who were there when Christopher Columbus landed. Or study the rainforests, mountains, waterfalls, Boiling Lake, Emerald Pool, hot springs, tropical plants and volcanoes, all equally fascinating subjects. The ship stays late in Barbados so explore it all. The intriguing Barbados Museum has artifacts from the Arawak Indians (400 BC), galleries of 19th-century military history, even a decorative arts gallery depicting a sugar planter’s lifestyle. Also known as Little England, it’s easy to find a proper British tea here. Tiny Antigua has gorgeous beaches – 365 of them. Virgin Gorda is most famous for The Baths and swimming around its pools, caves and grottos. And the little bar on the hilltop called Mad Dog, which has the best piña coladas in the world. Seriously.

San Juan

Ponce de Leon never did find the Fountain of Youth, but he did find stumble upon this lovely island, which had to be a close second. Just move to the rhythm of the ever-present salsa beat and you’ll be in the spirit in no time (secret – it’s all in the hips). Old Town San Juan is still partially enclosed by the original fortress walls dating back to the early 1500s. Attractively restored buildings with filigree cast iron balconies line its narrow cobbled streets, and cafés in shaded squares provide an ideal spot to linger. Outside the city the island offers an appealing array of golf courses, rainforests, and beaches galore.

Gustavia

St. Barts is a tropical paradise with a French flair. Red rooftops cluster on deep green hillsides, and front an irresistibly blue bay. Tranquil lagoons and dozens of creamy white sand beaches vie for your attention with chic boutiques and French restaurants, and the air is filled with mingling scents of frangipani and fresh baguettes. Explore the dramatic scenery in your own ATV, cruise the coast in a speedboat, or hike to a secluded cove for a swim.

Roseau

The fascinating history of the West Indies tends to be overshadowed by the islands’ breathtaking natural beauty. But it’s quite a story, and Dominica is the place to hear it. It was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans, due primarily to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs, after whom the sea is named. The 3,000 Carib Indians living on Dominica today are the only pre-Columbian population remaining in the eastern Caribbean. It was their tradition to color their bodies with a red dye, and the Spaniards, believing that this was their natural color, spread the rumor of a red-skinned race.

Bridgetown

If you were to close your eyes while enjoying a "high tea in Trafalgar Square," you would swear you were in London - if it weren't for the warm breezes and emerald green waters enveloping you. Nicknamed "Little England" by some, Barbados is home to many museums that chronicle the island's rich past and over 100 shipwrecks along its reefs that are a playground for divers from around the world.

Castries

Famous for its twin peaks shaped by the upheaval of a now extinct volcano, St. Lucia is one of the truly unspoiled islands in all the Caribbean. Here you'll find a variety of landscapes and eco-systems not found anywhere else in the region, including rain forests, mountains and beaches that truly deserve the "pristine" designation.

Virgin Gorda

Local lore has it that the unusual shape of this little bit of paradise reminded Christopher Columbus of a reclining, voluptuous woman, so he named it Virgin Gorda, the "Fat Virgin." She is suitably adorned with dramatic heights that plunge down from Gorda Peak to the sparkling turquoise waters far below. This is a good place to explore in a jeep, swim with dolphins, or hike the rugged trails throughout the island. Virgin Gorda is most famous for The Baths, where giant granite boulders are strewn across the beach and in the water, creating pools, caves, and grottos – a sort of natural water park.
