Destination Overview

Lying immediately east of Vanuatu and New Caledonia, Fiji is a Melanesian country made up of more than 300 tropical islands, initially formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. While 110 of these islands are inhabited, over 87 per cent of Fiji’s population call two major islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu home.

Renowned for its white-sandy beaches, friendly locals and magnificent soft coral diving, Fiji also has a bounty of natural resources, making it one of the most developed economies of the South Pacific. Today, its main source of foreign exchange is its sugar exports, along with its vibrant tourism industry.
  • Currency - Fijian Dollar
  • Population -  approx. 874,000+
  • Language - English, Fijian and Fiji Hindi are the main languages spoken in the region.
  • Time Zone - UTC+11

Did you know..?

Learning a few local words and phrases you can help open doors - and hearts - while travelling around Fiji’s tropical islands.

Bula (pronounced mboo-lah) - Hello
Vinaka (pronounced vee-nah-kah) - Please or thank-you
Moce (pronounced mow-they) - Goodbye

Who goes there?

You can cruise to the tropical islands of Fiji year-round on Princess Cruises, P&O Australia, Carnival Australia, and the luxurious Paul Gauguin, or travel between the months of September and May with Royal Caribbean, Cunard Line and Holland America Line.

Small-ship cruise lines Captain Cook Cruises and Blue Lagoon Cruises also offer short itineraries to Fiji's outer Yasawa Islands.

Best time to go?

Arguably the best time to cruise to Fiji is when the water and air temperatures are warm during the day but cooler of an evening, which is generally from April to May and October to November.

However, the best time to go also depends on what you plan to do during your stay. For diving, surfing and land-based activities such as hiking, the cooler winter months are ideal. If you're strictly interested in snorkelling, the summer months are more preferable as visibility is better and the water is warmer.

Travellers should also take into consideration that July and August, as well as the Christmas and New Year periods, are peak seasons for the islands, with airfares and accommodation more expensive during these periods.

Highlights

The highlights are many on a cruise to Fiji, including the following fun-filled activities
  • The reefs surrounding the island of Kadavu feature a variety of coral and marine life, underwater caves and drop-offs, affording a truly memorable experience for divers
  • The largest orchid collection in Fiji and sweeping panoramic views can be enjoyed on a day trip to Sabeto Valley and the Gardens of the Sleeping Giant
  • A great selection of shops, restaurants and nightlife await visitors in Fiji’s vibrant capital Suva.
