Christmas & Castles Aboard Avalon River Cruises

Experiencing central Europe aboard Avalon Waterways, Jo Peterson from Cruiseabout Takapuna shares her love of river cruising.

Our Avalon River Cruise kicked off in Prague, where we arrived to find it snowing; a lovely introduction to this gorgeous city. After doing a city tour around the Old Town and the Christmas markets, we were collected to take us to Nuremburg where our home for the next five nights awaited us - the gorgeous Avalon Vista.

Every level has something special for passengers to enjoy. The sapphire deck is on the same level as the dining room, and above this is the royal deck with club lounge boasting an outside area and wonderful 'chill out' area.

Checking into our cabin we found the bathrooms to be an absolute highlight; beautifully appointed and the largest I have experienced. Another lovely aspect of Avalon staterooms in the Panorama Suites is that the beds face directly out to the river bank, so when you wake and draw the curtains on your river cruise you're watching castles and beautiful scenery go by.

Every morning a light early riser breakfast is offered in the lounge or you can go to the dining room for a more civilised buffet. During the morning we were normally off the ship on a walking tour for a few hours, back for lunch and then out again for the afternoon.

At dinner there is a nice selection of local wine on offer. The food is in abundance, so you certainly won't go hungry. After dinner we would go (very slowly and very full) to the lounge and enjoy the entertainment, which was very good and often included dancing or crew shows.

The staff on board this cruise ships were very efficient and friendly, and you get to know them all well while on board. We received a newsletter every evening to your stateroom, and prior to this every night in the panorama lounge we were briefed by the cruise director about the day to come, so we were always well informed about shore excursions on offer.

At the end of our cruise we had a day in Frankfurt, where we browsed the main shopping strip called Ziel, the riverbank and Christmas markets.

All in all we had an absolutely wonderful time. The ships are beautiful and the service at the highest level, so I would thoroughly recommend the Avalon cruises experience.
